Overview
A medial branch block is used as both a diagnostic tool and a treatment for pain at the facet joints. It is an injection of a local anesthetic on the medial branch nerves. These nerves supply the facet joints. If the pain does not subside after injection then as a diagnostic value, it indicates the pain is not coming from the facet joint. If there is pain relief at injection, then it is both a diagnosis and treatment.
